An iron infusion delivers iron (ferric carboxymaltose) directly into your bloodstream through a drip. It’s used when oral iron tablets aren’t enough - because they haven’t worked, cause side effects, or your iron needs to be restored faster than tablets allow.

Because the iron goes straight into the blood, a single infusion can replace what would take months of tablets.

An infusion is considered when iron deficiency is confirmed on blood tests and your GP assesses that intravenous iron is the right option for you. Common situations include heavy periods, pregnancy-related iron deficiency, dietary causes, and conditions that affect iron absorption.

Every infusion starts with a GP consultation - your doctor reviews your blood results, checks suitability, discusses possible side effects, and writes the prescription. If you haven’t had recent blood tests, these can be arranged first with 4Cyte pathology on site.

The visit usually takes around an hour. A small cannula is placed in your arm, the iron is infused over about 15–30 minutes, and you’re observed for a short period afterwards. Most people drive themselves home and return to normal activities the same day. Aftercare is covered before you leave.

Public hospital day units can provide infusions at no charge with a specialist referral, usually with a wait. Private infusion services charge separately for the visit and the product.

Medicare rebates the GP consultations around an infusion. The infusion appointment fee is a private fee and no rebate figure is published for it, so the amount above is what you pay for that visit.

The infusion appointment, including observation, is $250. You also need a standard GP consultation first to confirm the infusion is right for you, which is $100 with the Medicare rebate processed on the spot, leaving $54.95 out of pocket.
