$250 infusion fee, published upfront
An iron infusion at Helios costs $250, plus a standard GP consultation first to confirm it’s right for you. Infusions are performed at our Unanderra clinic by our GPs and nursing staff, with 4Cyte pathology in the same building for the blood tests that come first.
What Is an Iron Infusion?
An iron infusion delivers iron (ferric carboxymaltose) directly into your bloodstream through a drip. It’s used when oral iron tablets aren’t enough - because they haven’t worked, cause side effects, or your iron needs to be restored faster than tablets allow.
Because the iron goes straight into the blood, a single infusion can replace what would take months of tablets.
When Is an Iron Infusion Considered?
An infusion is considered when iron deficiency is confirmed on blood tests and your GP assesses that intravenous iron is the right option for you. Common situations include heavy periods, pregnancy-related iron deficiency, dietary causes, and conditions that affect iron absorption.
Every infusion starts with a GP consultation - your doctor reviews your blood results, checks suitability, discusses possible side effects, and writes the prescription. If you haven’t had recent blood tests, these can be arranged first with 4Cyte pathology on site.
What Happens on the Day
The visit usually takes around an hour. A small cannula is placed in your arm, the iron is infused over about 15–30 minutes, and you’re observed for a short period afterwards. Most people drive themselves home and return to normal activities the same day. Aftercare is covered before you leave.

- Initial GP consultation - needed first to confirm the infusion is right for you. Billed at our standard consultation fees (a standard consultation is $100 with a Medicare rebate processed on the spot, leaving $54.95 out of pocket) - see the full fee schedule.
- The iron itself - ferric carboxymaltose (Ferinject) is listed on the PBS, so for eligible patients it’s dispensed on a subsidised PBS prescription. Ask about medication costs when you book.
